Why this is important

This result is important for two reasons. First it establishes that these things are very, very far away, so that means that we can use them to do tests of cosmology. Secondly, we saw an afterglow, after the burst. That gives us a hint of what causes these bursts. It allows us to rule out some models and allows us to say some models are favoured.
